About the Role
Natural Capital Research requires a skilled spatial modeller to specialise in mapping carbon density of vegetation as well as rates of carbon sequestration into vegetation and soils. Educated to at least Masters degree level in a relevant subject such as forest ecology or plant-soil interactions, candidates should have a demonstrable experience of working with remote sensing data products and/or forest inventory data, as well as experience in the efficient analysis of large spatial datasets using Python and R.

Natural Capital Research (NCR) provides tools, surveys, analysis and accounts to facilitate comprehensive natural capital assessments. The successful candidate will fill an exciting new position focused on the interface between terrestrial carbon modelling, global change biology, and sustainable above-ground biomass production, to meet the growing demand for evidence-based approaches to natural capital management. The incumbent will use an interdisciplinary field observatory, remote sensing, and/or modelling approach to predict terrestrial carbon storage and fluxes, and simulate the impact of land use changes on these resources. Research fields include the development of innovative tools based on big data and artificial intelligence to assess and improve the potential of ecosystems to mitigate climate change and to enhance the sustainable use of natural resources.

The salary will be £34,000 - £36,000 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) depending on skills
Predominantly home-based with regular UK travel to Oxford, London and to clients.
